For this project, I delved into the life of the Vietnamese last Empress - Hoàng Hậu Nam Phương, who had a unique upbringing under the French colonial ruling of Vietnam. The research shows an interesting transformation of Vietnamese fashion and architecture from strong Eastern rooting to Western influences and finally a fusion of both, known as the Indochina aesthetic. Inspired by Vietnamese ethnic diversity, this project researches traditional textiles and clothing of 54 Vietnamese ethnic tribes and re-interprets them into a contemporary collection.

The project pays tribute to Vietnam, my motherland. The elegant collection is a re-invention of the Vietnamese national dress in combination with international modernist design principles, localised modern architecture and ethnic crafts, textiles and uniforms. Whilst emphasising on formality and sophistication in terms of appearance, the garments are constructed to allow the wearer move with ease (2018).
